Future Regrets Not Withstanding

Wrote this in the middle of the night the other day.  It's a fair recession back to my older style of writing, but that just comes naturally to me at times.  I can't say it's a bad thing though, because I really think this is one of the best I've written in a while.

FUTURE REGRETS NOT WITHSTANDING

Side by side they sit,
Staring out into the night.
A flame blazing in the fire pit,
Flaring up as a log gets kicked.

He longs to reach out and hold her hand,
To calm her with his touch.
But he knows that she wants none of that.
It's feeling far too much.

She's made it clear so many times:
He's just not welcome in her heart.
Unbelieving still, he searches for a way;
Proof he's there already and there to stay.

They talk for hours about many things,
None of it of any matter.
Deep into the night an owl sings,
Stopping him short of overflowing.

The two souls sit still in silence
As the bodies speak and laugh,
But he never reveals the simple longing
That tears his spirit in half.

Side by side they sit.
It's more than he can stand.
Side by side they sit.
He longs only to hold her hand...
